Whitman School students, faculty, and staff moved into their spacious new quarters at the northeast corner of Marshall Street and University Avenue in spring semester 2005. In January 2006, the final construction details were completed, opening up the three-story Flaum Grand Hall to the rest of the building and offering dramatic views of both the campus and the city.
The Whitman School's new building was designed from the ground up to be a student-focused, high-tech facility that supports the learning experiences essential to a world-class management education—all within an environment that promotes a culture of community.
The new 160,000-square-foot building has 250 percent more space than the school's former home. Some of the signature spaces of the new building include:
- the three-story, 4,000-square-foot Flaum Grand Hall;
- the 200-seat Lender Auditorium;
- 22 state-of-the-art classrooms;
- 40 meeting rooms for student teams;
- dedicated student lounges and computer clusters for undergraduate and graduate students;
- an in-house Executive Education Center, with two classrooms, six meeting rooms, a lounge, and a dining room;
- an expanded Ballentine Investment Institute, with sophisticated simulation and financial research capabilities;
- the Couri Hatchery for supporting entrepreneurial start-ups;
- the 100-seat Olsten café;
- and, for hosting special events, the Milton Room and adjoining outdoor terrace.
The University community celebrated the building's official dedication on April 8, 2005 with a keynote address by Robert E. Rubin, former Secretary of the Treasury. Archived streaming video from the weeklong series of events surrounding the dedication is available on the Whitman School's Web site: http://whitman.syr.edu/about/news.asp?id=140.
