13. Crouse College

Built in 1889 the Romanesque Crouse College, designed by architect Archimedes Russell, was for many years home of the nation's first degree-granting College of Fine Arts. The building cost about half a million dollars and was the gift of John Crouse, a local merchant, banker, and SU trustee, and his son D. Edgar Crouse. The building now houses the main hub for SU's College of Visual and Performing Arts, the School of Music, several art studios, music practice rooms, a beautiful 1,000-seat auditorium, and Crouse's Holtkamp Organ. The Crouse Chimes, atop Crouse College, entertain passersby several times each day.
