8. Hendricks Chapel
Its location in the center of the campus is often said to symbolize Hendricks Chapel's role in Syracuse University life. Designed in
the Georgian Colonial style by architects James Russell Pope and Dwight James Baum '09, it was constructed in 1930 with the financial
help of Francis J. Hendricks, former mayor of Syracuse, state senator, and member of SU's Board of Trustees, in memory of his wife,
Eliza Jane Hendricks. The chapel hosts worship services for many religious denominations and also is the site of hundreds of special
services, convocations, and public lectures, as well as more than 2,500 weddings-many of them involving members of the Syracuse
University community. |
